These days, it’ll be hard to imagine Mega Man without Zero. Nonetheless, this game perfectly sets up Zero’s role in future games, becoming a staple of the Mega Man X franchise and even spawning his own spin-off, Mega Man Zero. I t all culminated in the infamous “What Am I Fighting For?” scene that has since become a meme due to its poor voice acting.

This makes Zero the catalyst of all the destruction that was wrought in the past three games. Wily from the original NES series, Zero was created to destroy any future incarnation of Mega Man and to spread the Maverick Virus. Not only did Mega Man X4 introduce an entirely new move set for Zero, which revolves around melee combos instead of long-range projectiles, it also fleshed out his backstory. In the latter game, he played almost exactly the same as X, with his signature beam sword being relegated to a one-hit kill move. Zero would make appearances throughout the first three Mega Man X games, with him sacrificing his life in the first, being brought back to life in the second, and was an optional character that players could use in short periods of time in Mega Man X3. He would be the zenith players aspired to reach as they grew stronger as X. Realising that a new Mega Man could not be dissimilar to the previous incarnation, the team at Capcom decided that Zero would be Mega Man X’s mentor instead. S eries creator, Keiji Inafune, actually intended for Zero to be the main protagonist of Mega Man X, with his sharp design being a stark contrast to the original NES Mega Man. X’s mentor and partner-in-crime, Zero, was finally going to have his own playable campaign, complete with his own moveset and special weapons to obtain.
